Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said he does not fear getting the sack after another disappointing result.
He saw his team crash into a 3-1 defeat against Brentford on Saturday, which has resulted in United being in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Football pundits and experts have all given their opinions on Ruben Amorim and what lies ahead as pressure mounts on him.
Ruben Amorim said he is not worried about his job at the end of another day when a previous step forward seems to have been followed by another one back.
The high spirits gained from last week’s victory over Chelsea collapsed in a 3-1 loss at Brentford, keeping a firm place in the bottom half of the Premier League for United.
Amorim’s points as a United manager remain 34 from his 33 league matches, and they are not yet capable of winning two matches in a row.
The much-touted progress after last year’s woeful 15th place hasn’t happened, and after that, there were more questions still hanging over Amorim’s future.
“I am never concerned about my job, I am not that kind of guy,” he told BBC Match of the Day. “It is not my decision. I will do the best I can every minute I am here.”
The United authorities have always emphasized that they have confidence in the former manager of Sporting.
Yet, it is occasions like these that would put this confidence into doubt, and without midweek fixtures to deflect focus, the inquest will be full.
If the team had only registered one win this season in the league, this defeat at Brentford proved to be the more painful because they saw the team dominating from start to finish against one that began the day just outside the bottom three.
Igor Thiago found the back of the net twice in the first 20 minutes of play and placed his team in safe control.
United got a goal back with the first goal of Benjamin Sesko’s time at the club but not enough to ignite a comeback as Brentford comfortably held on for the well-deserved victory.
The result left the United fans singing “You’re getting sacked in the morning” at their own manager.
Amorim’s Shocking Statistics Tell the Story
The statistics spell grim reading for Amorim and United fans. The Portuguese coach has, to date, lost 17 of his 33 league games since taking charge at Old Trafford.
A win rate of 36% for Amorim becomes the worst of any permanent United manager since World War Two.
Ashley Williams, a former midfielder for Wales and now working as an analyst for BBC Final Score, said,
“I don’t want to say they change managers, but how long can this continue? It seems to be every week that we’re talking about it. I’m a fan of managers who have a style and stick to it. That isn’t working. You have to adapt. I don’t see where Manchester United goes with this unless they change their manager.”
Ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown added,
“They don’t look good enough. You then look at it, and he only has a win percentage 1% more than Graham Potter, who has been sacked by West Ham. How is he still in the job? If he was 12 months after Ferguson, this would have been done weeks ago.”
These comments from respected former players show just how dire things have gotten. Many people now question in public whether Amorim is the right man for the job.
The patience of fans, media, and even some from within the club seems to be running out now.
Another bad sign about Amorim is how the team is able to progress without back-to-back wins. Most good teams build momentum with consecutive wins.
United cannot even manage to achieve back-to-back wins, and this shows inconsistency and a lack of the mental capacity to do so.
The position of the team in the league tells a story of its own. They lie in the bottom half of the league table without any sign of improvement.
This is just not acceptable for a club whose aspirations are to challenge for the title. The gap between expectation and reality has never been bigger.
Manchester United Fans Losing Faith in Ruben Amorim
The sentiment among the supporters of United is getting worse week by week. Many of those who had backed Amorim initially are now starting to have heartfelt doubts about his capability to turn things around.
The patience that was shown in the initial months is quickly dissipating. Social media is awash with criticisms aimed at both the manager and players.
The fans are getting frustrated owing to no apparent progress being made and the same mistakes being committed week in and week out. The away match ambience has turned brooding, with supporters letting their ire explode.
Losing against Brentford was particularly hard to swallow, as they were also desperate for a win themselves. United were comfortable favorites for that match and, in yet another boring display, failed.
This pattern of disappointing results is becoming all too familiar. Some fans are already calling for a change of manager before the situation goes downhill from here.
They cite other clubs that have acted quickly when results stopped improving. The concern is that United is wasting precious time by putting trust in a manager who is not delivering.
The board’s continued public affirmation of support for Amorim is starting to sound hollow to many supporters.
They’ve heard similar statements made by previous managers that were later on dismissed. This creates even more uncertainty about the club’s true intentions.
However, some other supporters still think that Amorim should have more time to apply his methods. They argue that the troubles of United go far beyond just the manager.
These supporters want the board to show consistency rather than yet another quick change.
What Happens Next
The international break gives everyone at United time to think about the situation. However, it also means two weeks of intense speculation about Amorim’s future.
Day by day, with each passing day where no progress is made, the pressure mounts against both the manager and the players.
A critical period will commence for United when play resumes, with several matches there for the taking.
If results don’t start changing favorably soon, the calls for change will only grow in volume. These weeks could prove all-determining for Amorim’s fate in relation to Christmas.
On the lookout will be the hierarchy of the club should any sign of improvement be noticed. Heavy investments were made in Amorim and his coaching staff, but cutting losses may be imminent should results not improve soon.
No manager is bigger than the club, especially when results are this poor. Player confidence also seems to be a serious issue that needs addressing. Too many of the United stars seem to have completely lost faith in the system and the tactics.
Getting the squad to believe in the methods again would be paramount for any hope of improvement.
Amorim will be under the greatest amount of pressure since the United return to work. Now everything feels like a must-win, putting even more pressure on the players and staff. This atmosphere is not just unhealthy.
