His failure to stop Declan Rice Conner led to the first goal, and also not being able to stop Ben White’s cross gave Victor Gyokeres the opportunity to make it two right into the second half.

Martin Zubimendi made it three, but Alejandro Garnacho came from the bench and scored twice, giving Chelsea another hope in the second leg.

In the post-match press conference, Liam Rosenior took the blame and defended his shot-stopper. He also revealed that injuries also affected his selection, as many of his first-team players were not available for selection.

He revealed that it was his first game at home as a Chelsea manager and also Sanchez’s first game with him, and he’s working tirelessly to get the best out of the goalkeeper.

“His saves in the second half were absolutely world-class. He did well, and that performance alone could have lifted the heavy burden on us going into the second leg.

“Today’s game is Robert Sanchez’s first game with me as a coach, and I have only had 2 days with him. He will definitely understand my ambitions better and will come good. As long as I am here, I have to make an impact on the team.

“Though I want to change how the team plays, at the same time, I don’t want to lose points because of my tactical decisions. I want to see myself win every game.

“Robert Sanchez’s performance was good tonight. One thing you will see from me as a Chelsea manager is that I will protect my players every single day.

“I am asking them to do something on the pitch, and if there is a mistake or something goes wrong, then I must take full responsibility for that.

“I completely believe in my team and what we want to achieve this season. I believe that in the long term, we will improve as a team. It is my duty to help the players improve and not to put them under the bus in press conferences.
