Making headlines across the football world, Joao Pedro Chelsea debut goal wasn’t celebrated, and that was for a good reason.
The Brazilian forward chose respect over rapture as he stood still after scoring against Fluminense, his boyhood club, which gave him his first opportunity for a professional game.
Chelsea signed Joao Pedro from Brighton & Hove Albion for £50 million this summer transfer window. At the age of 23, Joao Pedro has played over 200 matches in his career, making him one of the few young players who has played a vast number of matches.
He travelled with the Blues to the USA for the Club World Cup after completing his move. In the tournament, Pedro has played two matches, first against Palmeiras, where he came on from the bench and played 37 minutes, had 2 shots (one on target), and created 2 big chances.
Today he made his second appearance for the Blues as a starter against his boyhood club, Fluminense, and made a statement across the football world.
He scored 2 goals that propelled Chelsea to a 2-0 win against the Brazilian side, which has given them the ticket to the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Why Joao Pedro did not celebrate his goals against Fluminense
Joao Pedro didn’t celebrate his goal against Fluminense because it is his boyhood club. He rather stood still and asked the fans of Fluminense for forgiveness, as he is a product of Fluzão.
He made his first senior team appearance in 2019 for Fluminense and played a full season with them. In his debut season as a professional footballer, he made 37 appearances and scored 10 incredible goals.
After what looked to be an amazing season for a youngster, he moved to Watford in 2020 and later moved to Brighton for a fee around £30 million.
He played 70 matches as a Brighton and Hove Albion player and scored 30 goals across all competitions.
After just 2 years, Joao Pedro is now representing Chelsea at the FIFA Club World Cup and making a name for himself.
