Oliver Kahn warns Julian Nagelsmann against accepting the role of the head coach at Manchester United, pointing to the club’s record of managerial failures in recent years.
Speaking on Sky Germany, the former Bayern Munich chief executive said nearly every United manager in recent years has failed sooner or later. He urged Nagelsmann to think very carefully about where he goes next.
Kahn stopped short of telling him to turn the job down. He said whether United is the right step is something only Nagelsmann can know.
The comments arrive at a difficult moment for Old Trafford. Pressure has built on Michael Carrick following a heavy Champions League defeat.
The 4-1 loss to Como extended United’s winless run to seven matches. That has intensified questions about the manager’s future, even though Carrick was reportedly confirmed in the job until 2028.
Bruno Fernandes was among those to criticise the performance, pointing to a lack of pressure on opposition players. Carrick himself admitted the team did not carry out its defensive duties with enough intensity.
Early goals conceded have also been hurting the team’s confidence in recent matches.
If United do part ways with Carrick, it could be their fourth permanent head coach in just two years.
Nagelsmann, 39, is reportedly among the leading candidates to replace Carrick should he lose his job. Reports also claim he left the Germany role after a disappointing World Cup campaign and would be open to the position.
The link is not new. United were reported to be interested in him during earlier managerial searches, and sources close to the club previously named him as a figure of interest to the hierarchy.
Fabian Hurzeler has also been linked with the job, according to reports in the wake of the Como defeat. A separate report suggested United could approach Antonio Conte’s representatives if results fail to improve, though that claim remains unconfirmed.
Kahn’s comments were measured rather than dismissive. He worked with Nagelsmann at Bayern and spoke highly of him, saying he can build and develop a club and a team.
His concern was the environment. He noted that Nagelsmann is not someone with extensive experience at the very highest level abroad, and that both Bayern and the German national team had already been major challenges.
Kahn said the Premier League and United have not been known for much continuity in the managerial position in recent years. In his view, a coach has to consider where his strengths lie and which club he can genuinely help.
The warning reflects a wider pattern at Old Trafford. Managers have arrived with backing and big plans, only to be replaced when results turned.
The cycle has left the club searching again for stability. Any new appointment would need time, a clear squad plan and a hierarchy united behind the same style of play.
For Nagelsmann, the decision may depend on whether United can offer all three. Joining mid-crisis, with early exits and defensive problems still unresolved, would leave little room for a slow build.
For now, no approach has been confirmed and Carrick remains in charge. United’s next results will likely shape whether the speculation grows or fades.
