What a second half at Old Trafford. Manchester United from 2-nil down and booed off at halftime against Roma, winning by three goals to two. Their first win in 10 games. Where has a second half like that been all season?
The first half was woeful in every aspect, from the fight, commitment, quality, and individual errors. It was like what we have seen in recent weeks. But we said before halftime, “What is Michael going to say?” He got in there; he sent all 11 players back out. You thought, “Will he make a triple substitution? What will he do?” No. “Get out there; you have 45 minutes to put this right.”
Did they do that? He started 30 seconds into it when Baleba won the ball back in the middle of the park and he just drove. There was a real intent. Unfortunately for him, he had to go off with a hamstring. Had an opportunity to fill the ball across, and he could not even do that.
Tielemans came on, and it was just one-way traffic. It was too easy for Roma in that first half. They got off to a great start; good play for them. Roma’s right winger Soulé was outstanding. United could not deal with him.
They really, really could not. The second 45 minutes, Michael must have said, “Look, we have got to show some fight, some desire, something. Just go out there and roll your sleeves up.” They did that, perfectly.
The Red Devils were a little bit fortunate. Cunha gets brought down by Mancini for a penalty, and sometimes you need a lifeline.
Bruno Fernandes took the penalty, and it was saved, but there was encroachment from one of the defenders.
A second chance was given, and he put the ball into the roof of the net. Then United’s second goal, again, a mistake from Roma’s defender. He goes to clear it, misses the ball, and falls at Cunha, who is sharp, and he puts the ball in the back of the net.
That was after 83 minutes. Do you know what? When you need a little bit of fortune, you need a bit of luck. Michael Carrick stood there, having experienced a tough two weeks. People have been questioning whether he will still be there. I am not sure I believed he would be. But they stuck with him.
They go and get beaten, and then they came back last night. Did we really believe? Roma have been in great form. That second 45 minutes, and then Cunha got the winner’s shirt off and received a yellow card. Great feeling at that moment. It was not good when he got sent off with a challenge after getting another yellow card.
You could just see the relief from Michael Carrick. Could this be the turning point for him and this Manchester United team? We touched on it before, guys. Franny and Courtney said, This group of players has put them in this position. 17th in the Premier League, nowhere near good enough.
But these players will not be there come the end of the season. If they take responsibility, take accountability, and go, “Look, I have not been good enough, but I look at myself, I look at your team, and we have got 45-minute performances like that.” Good luck to them, because they showed a response when they were criticized outside by everyone.
Michael will come out with a smile on his face and certainly enjoy these moments, because it has been challenging for him and his team.
At times in that second half, it felt like Old Trafford of old. With the noise and the fans behind them. Roma did not have a single touch in the United box in that second half, or a single shot.
That is how dominant Manchester United were after the restart. But you can only imagine the headlines had they lost that game tonight. Could we go as far as to say that Cunha with those goals has saved Carrick’s job? Of course maybe, but they’ve got a lot to prove to turn things around at Old Trafford.
Matheus Cunha got sent off in the far corner, so he was walking. I do not know why he did not walk straight down on the pitch, and the referee let him go down the tunnel. He walked off the side of the pitch and was taking all the applause from the fans.
So by the time he had gotten off the final whistle, he was not down the tunnel. So then he came back on because he should be down the tunnel. So maybe Michael is thinking, “Get down the tunnel. We do not want any more trouble.” He is going to be suspended, so he is going to miss out. There was no need for that second yellow card. But sometimes emotions get the better of you.
Cunha sent off late, but he is still the hero for Manchester United with those two late goals. Two goals and a red card in eight minutes from Matheus Cunha. Manchester United, first win in 10. First win since they beat Sabah of Azerbaijan back in the middle of September.
😡 Carrick was FUMING with Cunha and sent the Manchester United match winner down the tunnel at full time. Cunha was sent off for a second yellow card after scoring a brace to seal a stunning comeback win 3-2. He came back out to celebrate with the fans, but Carrick was having none of it and sent him packing, much to the Brazilian’s bemusement. I can see where Carrick is coming from. It was a bit stupid of Cunha in such an important game after he’d already been booked for taking his shirt off and celebrating in the crowd. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the result. https://t.co/B8ii5tNGmi

How Michael Carrick needed that. Now it is on to Aston Villa at Old Trafford at the weekend, and they will arrive off the back of a 3-nil defeat at the Camp Nou against Barcelona.
Not a lot in the first half. Aston Villa shot themselves in the early doors. Keep it to Gomes. Gomes, poor ball to Yamal.
Yamal had a lot to do, but you still expected him to score. A couple of nice touches, bent it in the corner. After that, Villa had good chances to score. And should have scored at least one of them. Came out in the second half, and in a different class. Barcelona, by far, is the better team. Villa really never looked like getting back into it in the second half.
Therefore, it means they head to Old Trafford with United absolutely cock-a-hoop after their win against Roma. What about Villa? Dropped points against Fulham at the weekend. That is three without a win now. Maybe they did not expect to win at the Camp Nou, but will that knock their confidence?
It was a bit of a free swing last night. As I said, in the first half they did well; in the second half they were not good enough. But they will be different; they will be a hard team to beat this weekend. I know Man United. It might help them because Man United will come out and have a go at Villa. Villa on the counterattack, with Jackson, who had a good chance against Barca, will be too quick for that defense of Man United’s.
If they pick the right pass, they will pick Man United off. But it is a game now. Man United will be a lot more confident than they were, and the fans will be a lot more confident.
