Another dilemma at Old Trafford, as the stadium was empty after Bournemouth’s 3rd goal, but perhaps that’s a perfect metaphor of how everyone connected to this club maybe feels right now, especially the supporters.
It is another loss for Michael Carrick and Manchester United. Eight games now without a win in all competitions, their worst run since 2015 under the Dutchman Louis van Gaal. And there were quite incredible scenes.
Manchester United
At the final whistle, Michael Carrick, despite leading this team and the run they’re on, was serenaded by the Stretford End here at Old Trafford, singing his song. As you can hear now, “It’s Carrick, you know.” But then perhaps what was even more incredible is, as he goes down the tunnel, the players soon follow him, and they get booed by all the fans at Old Trafford who are still here.
It was quite incredible because it shows you that they don’t feel like Michael Carrick is the number one issue at Manchester United.
Yes, they apportion some of the blame to the players who’ve been on such a disappointing run to start the season, but there were also chants towards the board here at Manchester United, the club’s hierarchy, throughout the second half as each Bournemouth goal went in as well. So it was pretty unsavory.
The atmosphere got pretty, you have to say, toxic, around the Stretford End and around Old Trafford. This situation raises questions about Michael Carrick’s position, especially since he has spoken this evening. In his press conference after the game, he talked about how he shoulders all of the responsibility, whether that is at the ownership level, board level, or the players as well. He stated that he accepts full responsibility.
Well, what we can tell you is that, at TNNewsSports, we understand that Michael Carrick’s job is under increasing pressure, and at the moment, we know he’s essentially hanging by a thread. Club insiders believe he could be relieved of his duties very soon. It has been such a disappointing run. He has been under pressure in recent weeks, but the last two results show they lost 4-1 in Italy against Como on Wednesday night and another 3-0 loss this evening. And just to give you a bit more context, he’s also had two senior players over the last week come out questioning the club’s ambition, questioning his own tactics, Michael Carrick, and his staff.
His captain, Bruno Fernandes, was dropped today and was an unused substitute. He didn’t come on. That is a huge statement for the head coach to make; albeit for Carrick, he didn’t perform, and he didn’t get a performance out of it by his team. We think, to be honest, his future right now is in high doubt going forward, and we’d be very surprised if he is in charge next weekend away to Chelsea. But look, we’ll have to see. We at TNNews Sports think this story, though, can move very quickly at Manchester United, and Michael Carrick’s future could be resolved very soon.
